Ex-Congressman Mel Reynolds returns from Africa

CHICAGO (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds is back in Chicago and explaining how he was jailed in Zimbabwe.

Reynolds was arrested Feb. 16 and charged with overstaying his visa. It's something he says he's done before without incident during visits as a business consultant.

Authorities added a charge of possessing pornography, which he denied and which was dismissed. After five days in jail, Reynolds was fined for the immigration offense and deported.

The ex-congressman then went to South Africa. There, he told reporters he was targeted for threatening to reveal dealings with U.S. businessmen who violated sanctions against the government of Robert Mugabe.

He called a news conference in Chicago Wednesday with plans to divulge information, but said he was asked to meet with law enforcement officials first.
