North Ala. clinic that provides abortions to close
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) — The only abortion clinic in north Alabama is expected to close within a week.
Officials at the Alabama Women's Center said Tuesday that they would rather close voluntarily than be faced with a state intervention.
The clinic faced a July 1 deadline to bring its facility up to code as a surgical treatment center.
Alabama Women's Center administrators submitted blueprints for a new location to the state Department of Public Health. The department's Deputy General Counsel Brian Hale says the blueprints haven't been approved yet.
Clinic administrator Dalton Johnson says administrators will try reopening at the new facility after receiving state clearance.
Hale said a clinic providing abortions in Montgomery has complied with new requirements, and facilities in Mobile and Tuscaloosa are expected to make the July 1 deadline.
